Community Information: The Town of Vulcan, Alberta |
|

Vulcan's famous name came from a CPR surveyor, who had a penchant for Roman Mythology. In 1910 the surveyor named the town Vulcan after the roman God of Fire and Forge because it was to rest on the highest elevation point. Early Vulcan street names; Juno, Neptune, Apollo, Minerva, Jupiter and Mars were also from Roman and Greek Mythology.
Vulcan made agricultural history from the early to mid 1900's. From the early 1920's until a fire in 1971, Vulcan boasted the greatest grain storage capacity of any primary grain shipping point in Canada. Nine elevators, each with annexes, graced the skyline of Vulcan for 50 years. Photo's of Vulcan's famous "Nine in a Line" have appeared in books, newspapers, magazines and on calendars. Today, Vulcan County produces over 261,000 tonnes of wheat annually and county wheat and barley is exported to more than 70 countries world wide.
The Town of Vulcan is a progressive and thriving community that serves as the economic hub and trading centre for the County of Vulcan.
